How to take care of your child's teeth

A perfect smile as an adult is achieved by dedicating attention and cleaning to the teeth from an early age. Even before the teeth emerge, it is important for parents to take care of the baby’s mouth, while as they grow, the role of adults must be to teach children the rules of correct oral hygiene, a habit that, once adopted in childhood, remains for life.

Furthermore, even if the first teeth that emerge in children are the deciduous ones, it is important to keep them clean. Cavities are formed when the bacteria naturally present in the child’s mouth combine with sugars from food residues to form an acid that attacks the dental enamel. Teaching your little one to take care of their teeth is another perfect opportunity to consolidate your bond, and at the same time it makes visits to the dentist less fearful and helps create lasting healthy dental habits from early childhood.

How to clean baby's gums?

Parents often ask themselves when is the right time to dedicate themselves to taking care of their little one’s mouth. The answer is: from birth if you want to ensure maximum well-being for your child and prevent inflammation and discomfort.

Obviously, before the teeth emerge, it is not necessary or even recommended to use a toothbrush: in this phase it is sufficient to delicately pass over the gums and the few teeth that are about to emerge with a clean and moistened gauze, wrapped around the finger, or the appropriate rubber finger that is easily found in health stores. This gesture must be repeated at the end of each feeding to avoid the proliferation of plaque bacteria which can accumulate on the gums creating inflammation. At the same time, it is absolutely forbidden to dip pacifiers or bottle teats in sugar or honey to calm the baby and help him sleep.

When to start with toothpaste?

When the first teeth have appeared, it is advisable to start using the specific toothbrush for babies, with a small head and soft bristles: it should be passed over the teeth delicately. This operation should be repeated at least twice a day, although it would be advisable to do it every every time the little one eats or drinks something, insisting with the toothbrush, albeit with gentle movements, for a couple of minutes. After 12 months of life, in addition to the appropriate toothbrush, you can also use a fruit-flavored toothpaste.

Babycoccole has a range of unique children’s toothpastes that contain no parabens, Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS), PEGs or allergens. The fluoride-free formula is therefore indicated for the buccal hygiene of children from a very early age (0-6 years) in full respect of the gums and mucous membranes. The pleasant strawberry, apple and banana aroma makes daily teeth cleaning a useful and pleasant action even for children.

How do you brush baby teeth?

Parents should continue to brush the child’s teeth until he is able to do it himself, which generally happens around the age of three when teething is complete. The basic principles of correct oral hygiene must also be explained to the child. First of all, teeth should always be brushed in the morning after breakfast and in the evening before going to sleep and, during the day, after eating or drinking something to eliminate residues that cause plaque, which in turn is responsible for tooth decay and gum disease.

How to brush your child's teeth?

The child’s teeth should be brushed at least twice a day. Ideally it is best to brush them after breakfast and dinner, but the most important time to brush them is before going to bed, because tooth decay bacteria tend to grow at night.
